Friends since their days at Davidson College, writing partners JD DuPuy and ML Philpott combine complementary strengths and backgrounds with a shared passion for quirky humor. He’s the lawyer; she’s the poet.
A partner in a Charlotte, North Carolina, law firm, JD DuPuy has been living and observing every funny, strange, and torturous element of the law firm lifestyle for 15 years. Named a “Young Gun” (top lawyers under 40) by Business North Carolina in 2008, he is also a graduate of the Mecklenburg County Bar Leadership Institute and provides pro bono services to non-profit entities such as Habitat for Humanity. Over the course of his legal career, he has worked in many areas of practice, including general litigation, estate planning and administration, real estate and local government law.
Mary Laura (ML) Philpott is an award-winning writer and editor in Nashville, Tennessee. Her work is published regularly in national media under her clients’ names, as well as her own. She’s the editor of Musing, the literary journal for Parnassus Books, and her next book, Penguins With People Problems, is forthcoming from Perigee Books, an imprint of Penguin Random House, in 2015. When she’s not writing for work, ML is writing for fun. Her comic stylings can be found in a variety of publications as well as on her own blog. ML is not a lawyer, although she did apply to law school once. Then she realized she might actually have to be a lawyer afterward, so she didn’t go through with it. Whew. That was a close one.
